Jagdstaffeln or Jastas were "hunting groups" comprised of approximately 12 fighter aircraft.

Jasta 52 had received some Fok.D.VII aircraft on 1 June 1918 to supplement their Pfalz D.IIIa machines. By 22 July Jasta 52 was completely equipped with the Fok. D.VII.

Schumm served with Schutzstaffel 26, scoring two victories in late 1917. After Jastaschule I he joined Jasta 52 on 10 January 1918. Marat Schumm's sixth victory came on 24 July 1918 when he shot down Philip Burge of 64 Squadron.
